Payroll in Fulkrum

Pay your team without the headaches: we set your payroll up in Gusto, then you run each pay period while Gusto handles taxes and filings automatically. Connected to your books.

Payroll means paying the people who work for you, and making sure the right taxes are withheld and filed. It's one of those things that sounds intimidating and turns out to be fine once it's set up. Fulkrum's payroll is powered by Gusto. We help you get set up in Gusto, and from there Gusto manages the payroll itself. It also lives in the same place as your books.

Good to know: Payroll requires an active Bookkeeping plan (DIY or Full Service). If you don't see Payroll in your menu yet, it may show "Coming soon" until it's switched on for your account.

How it works, in short

We set it up for you in Gusto, then you run it yourself. Gusto manages the payroll, calculating taxes and filings automatically in the background. We don't run your payroll for you, and you're never left to figure out withholding tables or filing deadlines. Gusto handles that part.

Step 1: We get you set up in Gusto

When you turn on payroll, we help you enter the essentials once in Gusto: your business and tax details, your pay schedule (say, every two weeks), and how money moves (direct deposit from your business account). This is the one-time part. After setup, you continue to run payroll each period.

Step 2: Add your team

Add each person you pay:

  • Employees: name, pay rate or salary, and their tax details. They can enter their own info and bank details securely.
  • Contractors: for people you pay without withholding taxes.

Step 3: Run a payroll

Each pay period you review the hours or salaries, check the total, and approve. That's it. You run the payroll, Gusto processes it, everyone gets paid by direct deposit, and pay stubs are generated automatically.

Step 4: Taxes and filings happen automatically

This is the part that usually causes headaches, and it's the part Gusto handles so you no longer touch it:

  • Federal, state, and local payroll taxes are calculated and withheld.
  • The right amounts are paid to the right agencies on time.
  • Year-end forms (W-2s for employees, 1099s for contractors) are prepared and filed.

Step 5: It flows straight into your books

Because payroll and bookkeeping connect in the same hub, every payroll run shows up in your books already categorized, with wages, taxes, and fees in the right places. You don't re-enter anything, and your profit numbers stay accurate.

A few tips

  • Set the pay schedule and forget it. Once your cadence is set, running payroll each period takes a couple of minutes.
  • Let your team self-onboard. Having employees enter their own details saves you time and reduces errors.
  • Keep an eye on the first run. Double-check the first payroll; after that it's routine.

What you don't have to do

  • No tax tables or withholding math. Gusto handles it.
  • No remembering filing deadlines.
  • No separate re-typing of figures into your books.

We set it up in Gusto once, you approve each run, and Gusto keeps your team paid and your filings on time.
